With Café com Historiador, we invite you to immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Bahia. In this environment, you will be able to appreciate the beautiful panels signed by great Brazilian artists such as: Genaro de Carvalho, Carybé, Júlio Spinoso; and works by Di Cavalcanti, Nádia Taquary, Tatti Moreno, Caetano Dias, Calasans Neto and many others, along with the iconic photographs by Pierre Verger. Also noteworthy is the panel of white and blue tiles in high relief by Paulo Antunes Ribeiro. The building of the Wish Hotel da Bahia is a jewel of modernism in the country, listed in 2010 by the Institute of Artistic and Cultural Heritage of Bahia.
In addition, we offer an exclusive class on the history of the city of Salvador and Bahia, covering important moments and iconic characters, presented by the hotel's historian and curator Rafael Dantas. The experience culminates with a coffee and afternoon tea filled with typical Bahian dishes, with African, indigenous and Iberian influences mixed with the cultural ties that form Bahia's identity and arts.
Since the 1950s, the Hotel da Bahia, as the Wish Hotel da Bahia was named, has been a true stage for art, being the only one in Brazil to house such a distinguished collection of works that celebrate the exuberance and diversity of Brazilian culture. The following have stayed at the hotel: Michael Jackson, Baden Powell, Paul Simon, Pelé, Jorge Amado, Gabriel Garcia Márquez, Elis Regina, Maria Bethânia, Elba Ramalho, Xuxa, Milton Nascimento, the Rockefeller family and Robert Kennedy Junior. Authorities, presidents and kings have also stayed in the presidential suite, including: King Rainier of Monaco, King Carl Gustav and King Silvia of Sweden, Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko, Elizabeth II, the King of England, Charles III, Princess of Wales, Diana, among others.
How does the experience work in practice?
The Café com Historiador is an exclusive tour inside the hotel, led by a professor who explores the art, the history of the hotel’s construction and its artistic and cultural context. During the tour, you will learn about the cultural development of Salvador and how the hotel’s growth is intertwined with the development of the city.
The historian will spend approximately one hour with you, explaining and discussing these fascinating topics. The experience will end with afternoon tea, served after 4pm when the Victory Walk is closed, ensuring personalized service.
Afternoon tea includes typical items from Bahian and Northeastern culture, as well as sparkling wine, juices, tea and coffee. During this time, you will have the opportunity to talk more about the topics discussed and enjoy a selection of regional delicacies.
