With Coffee with a Historian, we invite you to immerse yourself in Bahia's rich history and culture. In this setting, you can admire beautiful panels by renowned Brazilian artists such as Genaro de Carvalho, Carybé, and Júlio Spinoso; and works by Di Cavalcanti, Nádia Taquary, Tatti Moreno, Caetano Dias, Calasans Neto, and many others, along with iconic photographs by Pierre Verger. Also noteworthy is the high-relief white and blue tile panel by Paulo Antunes Ribeiro. The Hotel da Bahia by Wish building is a jewel of Brazilian modernism, listed in 2010 by the Bahia Institute of Artistic and Cultural Heritage.
We also offer an exclusive lesson on the history of Salvador and Bahia, featuring key moments and iconic figures, presented by the hotel's historian and curator, Rafael Dantas. The experience culminates with a coffee and afternoon tea filled with typical Bahian dishes, with African, Indigenous, and Iberian influences blended with the cultural ties that shape Bahia's identity and arts.
Since the 1950s, the Hotel da Bahia by Wish has been a true stage for art, the only one in Brazil to house such a distinguished collection of works celebrating the exuberance and diversity of Brazilian culture. The hotel has hosted: Michael Jackson, Baden Powell, Paul Simon, Pelé, Jorge Amado, Gabriel Garcia Márquez, Elis Regina, Maria Bethânia, Elba Ramalho, Xuxa, Milton Nascimento, the Rockefeller family, and Robert Kennedy Jr. Officials, presidents, and kings have also passed through the presidential suite, including King Rainier of Monaco, King Carl Gustav and King Silvia of Sweden, Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko, Elizabeth II, King Charles III of England, Princess Diana of Wales, and others.
How does the experience work in practice?
Coffee with a Historian is an exclusive tour inside the hotel, led by a professor who explores the art, the history of the hotel's construction, and its artistic and cultural context. During the tour, you'll learn about Salvador's cultural development and how the hotel's growth is intertwined with the city's development.
The historian spends approximately an hour with you, explaining and discussing these fascinating topics. The experience concludes with afternoon tea, served after 4 p.m., when the Passeio da Vitória is closed, ensuring personalized service.
Afternoon tea includes items typical of Bahian and Northeastern culture, as well as sparkling wine, juices, tea, and coffee. During this time, you'll have the opportunity to discuss the topics discussed and enjoy a selection of regional delicacies.
